The Rapture is definitely and inexorably looming. But not necessarily in a year that most who are reading these words now will see, during our lifetimes. It may easily be decades away, yet.

     Jesus said that the end of the age would take place before the passing from the earth of the generation who'd seen all that He predicted in Matt. 24. Most Bible scholars think that the "fig tree" event that marked the start of that countdown was the 1967 War, in which the Jews/Israelis recaptured all of Jerusalem.

     Right now, as this is being written in 2009, there's a person living on earth who's 115 years old. She may be the oldest now alive.

     And if so, when she dies, then at that moment her generation, which began in 1884, will be gone from the earth.

     The generation that began at the time of the 1967 War will likely last for at least 115 years. Probably more, given the probability of major upcoming medical breakthroughs. But let's say it'll be 115 years from 1967 when the last of that generation is gone.

     If so, the Rapture could still be as far in the future as 2082. (And maybe considerably later.)

     So don't hold your breath. It will be a very long time before the generation that Jesus referenced will be on the verge of passing from the earth. And if the Rapture happens near the end of that time frame, it could still be scores of years in the future. Maybe even four score.
